Thirteen Cash Prizes will be Awarded and First Place Winner Claims $5000

Washington, D.C.-The Independent Women’s Forum’s R. Gaull Silberman Center for Collegiate Studies is proud to announce its fifth annual college essay contest. College women enrolled in any four-year college or university worldwide during the 2009-2010 school year are invited to enter this competition. Deadline is December 1, 2009.

This year, students are asked to answer this question in 750 words or less:

Many campus coffee shops boast that they “proudly serve fair trade coffee,” but does the fair trade movement actually make a difference in the lives of the poor and disadvantaged? Is free trade also fair trade?

To date, IWF has awarded more than $40,000 in prize money to students through its essay contest. This contest is an excellent opportunity for students to think critically about the most important issues facing our country and to have the opportunity to win valuable financial assistance for their education in the process. “In addition to over $10,000 in prize money, applicants have the chance to get their writing in front of an all-star panel with some of the best writers in the country including Kimberley Strassel and Melanie Kirkpatrick of The Wall Street Journal, and best-selling author Myrna Blyth,” said Tatiana Posada, director of the Silberman Center.
